Start the new year off with a glint of brightness on Tuesday 7 January with inspiration from three visionary co-authors of Earth4All, hosted by author and member of The Club of Rome Jeremy Lent.
There are plenty of grim predictions for what 2025 might bring, as US president-elect Donald Trump prepares for his inauguration on January 20. But, as Jeremy Lent suggests in a recent article, it’s time to broadcast the fact that there is an alternative to the system of extraction and exploitation that has led to the rise of authoritarianism across the world.
The Earth4All initiative is a vibrant collective of leading economic thinkers, scientists, and advocates, convened by groups including The Club of Rome, the Potsdam Institute and the Stockholm Resilience Centre. On Tuesday 7 January, three of its leading authors will join Jeremy Lent on the Deep Transformation Network for a free webinar to discuss what the Earth4All pathway looks like:
- Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Executive chair of Earth4All and Global Ambassador of The Club of Rome
- Jayati Ghosh, Professor Economics at University of Massachusetts
- Ken Webster, Director, International Society for Circular Economy
Sandrine, Jayati, and Ken, along with a team of over 40 world-leading thinkers, have identified the need for five extraordinary turnarounds:
- Eliminate poverty with new economic models for low-income countries that reverse historic injustices.
- Reduce inequality to ensure that the wealthiest 10% take less than 40% of national incomes.
- Empower women through education for girls and ensuring women have greater agency, rights, resources, and economic security.
- Transform food systems for a regenerative, sustainable redesign that works for all within planetary boundaries.
- The energy turnaround targeting net-zero emissions by 2050 with energy security for most countries.
These turnarounds, along with their underlying rationales and a roadmap to accomplish them, were published in 2022 in a comprehensive book, Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity.
But the book alone is just one element in the Earth4All initiative. Along with it, the team published a series of 17 Deep Dive papers covering a wide range of topics such as a just transition, a Universal Basic Dividend, regenerative agriculture, and “the system within.”
They are also pursuing a global campaign that aims to make the Earth4All vision a reality, advocating for governments to adopt policies that will enable resilient and healthy societies, while providing a platform to connect and amplify the voices of people and organizations who want to upgrade our economies.
In this session, Jeremy Lent will be discussing some highlights of the Earth4All initiative with Sandrine, Jayati and Ken. The first half will cover some key topics including:
- What are crucial levers for eliminating poverty?
- What is a Universal Basic Dividend and how could it be implemented?
- What are key parameters of a just transition to undo the historical inequities of the global economic and financial system?
- What is Earth4All’s strategy for generating transformative policy change?
- What can Deep Transformation Network members do to support it?
Then, after a brief breakout group period, you will have the opportunity to ask them your own questions.
