Earth4All and the Igarapé Institute are hosting a High-Level Roundtable on the essential linkages between planetary stability, poverty, inequality and justice on Friday, November 15, 2024 from 14:00 to 16:00 Brasilia Standard Time. This is an in-person only event and will be convened at: Espaço Kobra — Térreo 2 — Território do G20 Social, Praça Mauá, Rio de Janeiro.
The Roundtable will address the following key questions:
- How does humanity’s future on Earth depend on our ability to maintain a stable, resilient Planet?
- How is the fight against poverty and inequality our best chance for improving planetary stability?
- How can we elevate greater ambition for transformative change to systemically manage these inter-connected risks?
The Roundtable will consist of an expert panel discussion, followed by an interactive discussion session with the audience.
The premise of the High-Level Roundtable is that the successful renewal of multilateralism must be anchored in the recognition that the stability of the planet – now at risk – is a prerequisite for equality, justice and poverty. At the same time, there can be no planetary stability without concerted action on poverty and inequality if, indeed, we are to ensure fair and equitable prosperity for all. The key challenge is that these interdependencies are poorly understood and under-recognised in multilateral fora – where they continue to be dealt with in isolation. However, with the planetary emergency as our new normal, we can no longer continue to fail to address these issues systemically.
The High-Level Roundtable speakers include:
Gustavo Westmann, Special Advisor for International Affairs, Presidency of the Republic of Brazil (Welcome remarks)
Maria João Rodriques, President, European Foundation for European Studies (Moderator)
Ilona Szabó de Carvalho,Co-founder and President, Igarapé Institute
Felipe Hees, Brasil Sous-Sherpa to the G20
Luciana Costa, Director of Infrastructure, Energy Transition and Climate Change Division of BNDES
Ana Inoue, Superintendent, Itaú Educação e Trabalho and Director, Instituto Acaia
Justice Luis Roberto Barroso, Chief Justice, Brazilian Supreme Court (tbc)
Laurence Tubiana, CEO, European Climate Foundation and Professor, Paris Institute of Political Science (tbc)
This November Roundtable builds on a series of high-level convenings that started with the High-Level Roundtable on Poverty, Equality and Planetary Stability at the UN Summit of the Future (organised by Earth4All and partners). These convenings will continue into 2025 and lead to the establishment of a High-Level Coalition of Member States, who will advance a new political narrative to accelerate simultaneous, coherent and ambitious action on poverty, equality and planetary stability.
